Awake and Asleep

An old Hasidic tale:     “When a tailor is awake he is a tailor but when he sleeps he is no longer a tailor.     When a carpenter is awake he is a carpenter but when he sleeps he is no longer a carpenter.     However, though a rabbi is awake is indeed a rabbi, he remains a rabbi even when he sleeps.”

A New Beginning

This was a peaceful tearing like the peaceful tearing of twilight when the warp and woof are parted for an instant so that their continuing can take place that was a peaceful tearing like the tearing that parts the eyelids in the morning when sleep dissolves before wakefulness rises to a new beginning.   -Rivka Miriam/Rabbi Steve Sager

Patience

When you just can't fall asleep, it's no use trying to force yourself to sleep. The more you try to force yourself, the more sleep will elude you. The same applies to many other things: it is not good to force yourself too much, because the more you try to force yourself, the stronger the opposing forces will become.   At times this applies even to prayer and devotion. You should certainly make every possible effort to sanctify yourself and attain true devotion. When something can be done today, don't leave it for tomorrow - because the world never stops for a moment. Man's world consists only of the present. Whatever you can do to serve God, do immediately and determinedly without delay. Who knows what obstacles you may face from the outside and from within if you leave it until later?  But at times you may see that, despite all your efforts and determination, you simply cannot achieve what you want. Sometimes you must simply wait. Don't be discouraged because y...

Re-Jew-venated

Rabbi Alexandri said: “When you leave your things with another human being for safekeeping, even though they may have been new when they were delivered, they often return used and worn out. The Holy One, however, is different. When we leave things in God’s care, all worn out, the Holy One returns them to us new. This is obvious. A worker will work all day and come home tired. As he sleeps the worker is at peace since his soul is in the hands of the Holy One blessed be He. At dawn, the soul returns newly rejuvenated for the worker’s body. Torah teaches us that souls are renewed every morning; great is our dependence on You.    Tehillim Rabbah 23:7

Rest

Rabbi: “Why is it that I’ve barely begin my sermon before you close your eyes and go to sleep?  You don’t even know what I’m going to say.” Congregant: “Don’t worry, rabbi, I trust you.”  -Rabbi Colin Eimer

Boundaries

"Ive placed land mines around my bedroom door.  Thus, if the cleaner zooms is within 20 feet of my room it'll be a good joke on our maid.  The only disadvantage is that, after a direct hit, you have to get a new vacuum cleaner.  Also a new maid." - -Groucho Marx The joke reveals a truth: boundaries are to be seen and respected.  According to the Talmud a four foot invisible perimeter surrounds each person.  When we come within that area we are within their boundary.

Sleep

Morpheus and Thanatos were the gods of sleep and death in Greek mythology.  They were brothers. In most civilizations sleep and death are closely aligned.

The Pitfall of Anger

A preacher was bothered by a parishioner sleeping during his services, even during his sermon.   Getting angrier and angrier he finally whispered to the congregation, “All who wish to walk in the kingdom of heaven, stand up.”   They all rose.   Then the preacher shouted: “Now all those who wish to walk with the devil, rise.”   The poor sleeping man was startled and quickly stood.   He looked around and so no one else standing so he said, “I don’t know what we’re voting on preacher but it looks like you and me are the only ones for it.”   -Lyndon Johnson

Too Much Coffee

An Israeli joke tells of Yossi and Shmulik sitting at a cafĂ© in Tel Aviv drinking coffee all day. Yossi explains, “We have to watch our caffeine intake.  Too much and it interferes with our sleep at the office.” We cannot be happy unless we are productive.  Think about what makes you most happy.  Isn't it when you are creating?

Sleep Tight!

"The good ones slept better...while the bad ones seemed to enjoy the waking hours much more." - Woody Allen Is this true?  Only if you are an envious type.  The reality is that those who sleep well, live well.

Sleep at Shul

A minister had an agnostic friend with he often indulged in discussions on their respective views. The cleric kept urging for his friend to attend a religious service, hoping to be able to reach him under the most favorable conditions. Finally, the agnostic friend agreed to come and the preacher prepared and delivered a masterful sermon.  “I must say this for your sermon; it kept me awake almost all night.” The clergyman gloried.   “I am most happy that I finally was able to make you doubt the wisdom previous convictions.” ”Oh no!   It wasn’t at all!   You see when I nap during the day I cannot sleep at night.”
