The Choice

Daniel Chwolson, the great nineteenth century Orientalist, who began life as a Jew, converted to Christianity and eventually became Professor of Hebrew and Syriac at the Royal University of St Petersburgh. Asked if he was a sincere believer, he answered: “Yes, I sincerely believe that I’m better off as a Professor at the Royal University of St Petersburgh than as a cheder teacher in Shinpeshok.” – Chaim Bermant In the past, enterprises and opportunities were closed to Jews.  Some moved inward embracing their heritage at a cost, while others jettisoned their roots to make a living.

"When Elijah went up to heaven he travelled by chariot.  When Mohammed did the same he travelled by horse - which is probably why Disraeli referred to Arabs as as "Jews on horseback." - Chaim Bermant We are all related.

Ask

“I once heard a story about a Jew who became a trappist monk, but I couldn’t believe it, for although I could imagine a Jew taking a vow of poverty, and even of chastity, I could not imagine him taking a vow of silence.”   - Chaim Bermant We are taught by our tradition to ask questions.   This is how we learn, not by silent obedience but by inquiring.   To some this is a foible.   To us this is an attribute.
