Mayor Peter Flaherty of Pittsburg told of how he and his wife, both of whom grew up in Pittsburgh, had many friends all over the city. One day they were taking a walk when a construction worker came over and greeted the mayor and his wife. The mayor asked about her about him. She replied, “A man I used to date when I was younger.” He said, “Aren’t you lucky, dear, to be married to the Mayor of Pittsburgh instead of a construction worker?” She retorted, “Aren’t you lucky, dear, that because I didn’t marry the construction worker, you are the Mayor of Pittsburgh?” -Rabbi Gerald Zelizer We are who we are only because people who loved us helped get us there.
