Our rabbis taught: When Rabbi Elazar ben Perata and R. Hanina b. Teradion were arrested, Rabbi Elazar ben Perata said to Rabbi Hanina ben Teradion: Happy are you, for you have been arrested on one charge; woe is me, for I have been arrested on five charges. Hanina replied: Happy are you, for you have been arrested on five charges, but you will be saved; woe is me who was arrested on one charge and I will not be saved; for you have occupied yourself with the study of Torah and acts of loving kindness, whereas I occupied myself with Torah alone. - Talmud, Avodah Zarah 17 In our ancient tradition there are two imperatives: 1. Learn. Grow. Be open to new Torah knowledge and actively seek it out. 2. Be in the world, working every day to make it kinder, better. Be the embodiment of the Living Torah.
