Once there was a young rabbi, but he was a schlemiel and never got anywhere despite his learning. One day a new rabbi was being chosen for the principal synagogue in town. Our schlemiel too was a candidate for the post. “Since you are such a schlemiel leave the whole matter to me,” his wife told him. So he let her do all the wire pulling and soliciting of influential voices for him. Finally, with his wife’s and God’s help, he was elected to the post. His newfound dignity turned his head. He began to speak grandly to his wife and tried to lay down the law for everything. Finally, they quarreled. “To the whole town you may be rabbi of the Great Synagogue,” he lashed, “but to me you’re the same old schlemiel! You think that because you are the rabbi, I’m the rebbetzin. Believe me, it’s the other way around. Everybody in town, except you, knows you are the rabbi because I’m the rebbetzin.” Every now and again it is good ...
