A Soulful Journey

"One may not turn a field into a yard, nor a yard into a field, nor a yard into a city, nor a city into a yard." -Talmud Arachin 33b As long ago as 2,000 years the rabbis were concerned that able land needed to be protected.  What does this say about our time and our responsibility to protect our  environment?

According to an ancient legend a certain small village sought to strike a bargain with God. They had been experiencing many years of crop harvests. They thought they could improve on God's way of doing things. They asked God for permission to plan the weather for the next year's harvest. God agreed.  Whenever they asked for rain, God sent rain. Whenever they asked for sun, God sent sun. That year, the corn and wheat were higher and thicker than ever before. When harvesting, however, the farmers discovered that the tall corn had no ears, and the thick wheat had no head of grain. They complained bitterly to God.   God replied, “ When you asked for rain I sent rain. When you asked for sunshine, I gave sunshine. You never asked for the harsh north winds, however.   Without the harsh and north winds, there is no pollination, and with no pollination, there is no crop.”

As the system of crop rotation is such a success...."isn't it reasonable to believe that the scalp might respond to similar treatment?  In the winter we would grow hair on our heads, and then in the spring, as the hair began thinning and falling into the soup, the scalp could be plowed up and string beans planted?"    - Groucho Marx, Memoirs Logic does not always work but it is inevitably entertaining.  Like children, we should never stop the joyful process of wondering.
