Time

“He spends much of his time before a mirror, admiring himself and carefully arranging his hair.   He is more with his barber than he is with his teachers.   Were he bald, he would be better educated.” This lament is from a Roman father of the first century, writing to a friend about his teen-age son .   -- James Dent Excavators at the ancient city of Aphrodisias in Turkey, discovered the following inscription at the entrance of a public bath: “The customer is held responsible for the loss of any money from purse or belt not previously checked with the attendant.”   -Martin Buxbaum Who says we are more advanced than in past years?   What was, is and will   be.

Technology

“Actually a root word of technology, teche, originally meant “art.”   The ancient Greeks never separated art from manufacture in their minds…”   -Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance Perhaps the race toward greater automation is best looked at through the lens of art.   It then becomes an object of man’s creativity and less a crutch or fearsome adversary.

“One recent contributor to a medical journal wrote: ‘In an increasingly godless society, we find technology pushing us into areas where there are no rules to break and no principles to guide it'.” – "Jewish Chronicle", Jonathan Sacks, 1982. Our task is to work in this ever shifting  world and hold fast to the truisms that have held us together through the millennia.

Learn and Grow

“In a culture of warring specialisms, drowned in fragmented data and fine-toothed analyses, syntheses, is not merely useful – it is crucial.”   - Alvin Toffler , Third Wave Learning is how we relate to our world and respond to the call from God of making our world more perfect.

A Old Parable for e New Problem

A pygmy legend tells of a little of a little boy who finds a bird.  The bird sings with a beautiful voice so the boy brings it home.  He asks his father to bring food to the bird but the father does not want to trouble himself to bring it food every day.  So the father kills it.  The legend goes that the man killed the bird and with the death of the bird so was the death of its song.  And with the death of the song the man killed himself.  He died forever. -Joseph Campbell A profound old truth for an age when we watch as our planet suffers and loses its song.
