Man Does Not Live By Bread Alone

A story is told of someone told movie mogul Samuel Goldwyn  that George Bernard Shaw's plays would make good movies, and he was trying to get the rights without paying too much.  “Think of the millions who would otherwise never see your plays. Think of the contribution to art,” Goldwyn said.  Shaw replied, speaking for creative people throughout history dealing with their financial backers: “The trouble is, Mr. Goldwyn, that you think of nothing but art, and I think of nothing but money.”

On Language

Once in a particularly irascible mood, George Bernard Shaw took pen in hand to reply to critic who is complained that he had split an infinitive. ”Well, why not to double split, or treble, quadruple, quintuple, centuple split? Nothing wrong with split as such, is there? What is grammar?  Usage. Whose usage?  The usage of the best masters of the language.  I am one of the best 10 living now."

Mean Spirits

"We ought to have declared war on Germany the moment Mr. Hitler's police still Einstein's violin."  - George Bernard Shaw When people show callousness and mean-spirited behavior at the trivial, we are all in danger.

On Friends

George Bernard Shaw sent Winston Churchill two tickets to his latest play, with a note saying, “Here are two tickets to my new play. Bring a friend, if you have one.”

You Are Not the Center

George Bernard Shaw said: “ This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one … the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.”

Anger

George Bernard Shaw once observed, "If you strike a child, take care that you strike it on anger, even at the risk of maiming it for life.  A blow in cold blood nether can nor should be forgiven."

Proof

"The devil quotes Scripture." - George Bernard Shaw You can say virtually anything and back it up with a verse from the Bible.  Taken liberally from any one of the many biblical books it is possible to find words that "proofs" for even absurd statements.   In your soul you always know the truth.  You cannot be deceived without your consent.

Change in Others

George Bernard Shaw once remarked, “The smartest man I know is my tailor.   Whenever I go to him to be fitted he always measures me. “   The tailor assumed his customers would change by the time he next saw them.   Shouldn’t we look at people the same way?

Change

George Bernard Shaw said that the smartest man he ever met was his tailor.   Whenever he would visit him, the tailor would always measure him anew, never assuming he was the same size, recognizing that there stood before him a new man. Isn’t this the goal of life?   It is not enough to stay alive, one must be in a continual state of renewal.   And expect the same of others.
