Wisdom

Alexander the Great is reputed to have been very wise.  What is the definition of wisdom? One who is modest enough to accept wisdom from others.   Alexander Great once arrived in a town inhabited by warlike women.  They told him: "If you killed us, people will say, "he defeated women!" but if we killed you, they will say, "What a king!  He was defeated by women." Therefore Alexander told them: "Bring me some bread. I am hungry." They brought a handful of gold instead. "Perhaps I can eat gold?!" Alexander asked in anger. The women answered him thus: "If what you wanted was bread, couldn't you find it in your kingdom?  Was it necessary to come so far for bread?" Alexander then departed leaving an inscription over the gates of that town: "I, Alexander, have been a fool to come to Africa to be taught by women."  -Buber, Tanhuma

Teach Me

“Teach me to feel that thou are always nigh; Teach me the struggles of the soul to bear. To check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh; Teach me the patience of the unanswered prayer.” - “Spirit of God” George Croly 1854
