The Last Prayer Leader

He died, the last leader-in-prayer,
Locked-up stands for lonely the Synagogue Hall
The windows all boarded, and shadows
Embarrassed, I’m making full.
It lays, like eternal grieving
All over the naked walls
And under the Crown of Glory:
Broken rest to Priestly hands.

He died, the last leader-in-prayer,
There’s no one to walk to the lectern.
Languishing flickers the flame, the eternal
Himself in his corner alone.

And hushed on the steps to the Ark- Scrolls
The Shechina, the desolate, stands;
Her head bowed low in deep sorrow
And black as the night is her dress.

And it seems that her lips move in murmur
A whispered last pleading request,
And there’s a voice heard form the Ark-tapestry-cover
Too late, my devoted, too late!

“Between 1305 and the early 1800’s. the House of Taxis ran a form of pony express service all over Europe….   Its couriers clad in blue and silver uniforms, crisscrossed the continent carrying messages between princes and generals, merchants and money lenders.” –Alvin Toffler, The Third Wave We may think we are the first generation consumed by rapid communication but we are not.   Throughout our history it has been a priority. Of course, now in the 21 st century we must ask: are we better or worse for it?
