Many years ago Mayor Teddy Kollek
of Jerusalem was asked a number of hard questions dealing with the many
challenges of making peace. After he was asked how much longer it will take for
Jerusalemites to live together in peace he answered, “It's been 100 years since
the Civil War, and you still haven’t resolved the problems between the North
and the South, between black and white and brown. It’s only been 20 years since
Jerusalem was reunited. Give us
time. We know where we are going.”
“Between 1305 and the early 1800’s. the House of Taxis ran a form of pony express service all over Europe…. Its couriers clad in blue and silver uniforms, crisscrossed the continent carrying messages between princes and generals, merchants and money lenders.” –Alvin Toffler, The Third Wave We may think we are the first generation consumed by rapid communication but we are not. Throughout our history it has been a priority. Of course, now in the 21 st century we must ask: are we better or worse for it?
