How We Work Together

Two women and two men are in a shared taxi traveling to Jerusalem.  One is a yeshiva student.  The man sitting in the front seat turns to adders the student, “Excuse me, but I’d like to ask you a question.  Do you really believe that the world is over 5700 years old?”
 “Absolutely,” answered the student.
“How can you believe that?  I am a geologist and I assure you that the world came into being much longer than 5700 years ago.  It cannot be.”
The student responded, “If you believe that, then how can you call yourself a Jew?”
“I am 100% Jewish,” the man answered.  “I am part of the Jewish people, history and land, I speak Hebrew, I feel Jewish…”
At this point the driver interjects, “I agree with him.  Since when do you have to believe in the creation of the world to be Jewish?”

In a few moments the taxi is full of heated arguments debating Jewishness.  When the taxi finally arrives in Jerusalem, each wishes the others well, and they go their separate ways peacefully.

This is how life is supposed to be.  We question, debate but love must always undergird every relationship.

“Between 1305 and the early 1800’s. the House of Taxis ran a form of pony express service all over Europe….   Its couriers clad in blue and silver uniforms, crisscrossed the continent carrying messages between princes and generals, merchants and money lenders.” –Alvin Toffler, The Third Wave We may think we are the first generation consumed by rapid communication but we are not.   Throughout our history it has been a priority. Of course, now in the 21 st century we must ask: are we better or worse for it?
