English is Tough

Trenite taught English in Haarlem, Netherlands, published a booklet called “Drop Your Foreign Accent,” which contained a poem called “The Chaos.”  A selection:

Dearest creature in creation
Studying English pronunciation
I will teach you in my verse
Sounds like corpse, corps, horse, and worse
I will keep you, Susy, busy,
Make your head with heat grow dizzy.

Finally: which rimes with “enough”
Though, through, plough, cough, hough, or tough?
Hiccough has the sound of “cup.”

My advice is –give it up!

Those who learn English have it very tough.

Of course, now in the 21 st century we must ask: are we better or worse for it?
