Enthusiasm

An elderly shadchan was showing a novice the trade.  He took him on his rounds and explained, “The most important thing is to back up what I say – we mustn’t be seen to lie.”
The next day they went to a wealthy man’s home to speak about a shiddach for his son.
“The girl I have for you comes from a very fine family,” the elder shadchan said.
“A fine family, indeed,” the young shadchan called out. “The finest in the world!"
“Are they wealthy?”
“Wealthy?  They are millionaires,” the young one agreed.
“And is the girl pretty?”
“Of course.”
“What do you mean pretty??  She is an outstanding beauty!”
“The only fault is that she has a little hunch on her back,” the older shadchan continued.

“A little hunch?” The young apprentice became enthusiastic.  “Why it is a monument!”

Sometimes it pays to be a little reticent.

“Between 1305 and the early 1800’s. the House of Taxis ran a form of pony express service all over Europe….   Its couriers clad in blue and silver uniforms, crisscrossed the continent carrying messages between princes and generals, merchants and money lenders.” –Alvin Toffler, The Third Wave We may think we are the first generation consumed by rapid communication but we are not.   Throughout our history it has been a priority. Of course, now in the 21 st century we must ask: are we better or worse for it?
