Seeking Honor

A wealthy householder gave a feast in honor of his son's Bar Mitzvah and invited many prominent guests.  Among them was a venerable rabbi, a humble man who disliked recognition for his distinguished services.  Refusing a seat of honor the rabbi sat in an inconspicuous place at the far end of the room.
The host led all his other distinguished guests to where the sage sat and proclaimed, "My friends, this is the seat of honor."
Moral: One's surroundings do not make the man.  The man makes the surroundings.
