Start Early!

A man enters a bookstore on the lower Eastside of New York in order to buy a siddur for his einekle.  The bookseller shows him many different editions, yet he rejects each one in turn. The customer points to huge tome on the top shelf, an enormous Kol Bo siddur that includes dinnim, minhagim and perushim.  Climbing the ladder to retrieve the volume, the mokher sefarim, impressed, asks “At which yeshiva does your grand son study? He must be a real lamdan! How old is he?”

“He’s only two.”

”So why are you buying him such a siddur?”

“Because my friend, when you give a child a book, what does he do? He rips out the pages!  If I buy him a thin book, by the time he’s ready to use it, there will be nothing left but the cover.  This way I can at least hope that when he grows up is ready to use it, there will be some pages left in the book.”  - Rabbi Al Lewis

“Between 1305 and the early 1800’s. the House of Taxis ran a form of pony express service all over Europe….   Its couriers clad in blue and silver uniforms, crisscrossed the continent carrying messages between princes and generals, merchants and money lenders.” –Alvin Toffler, The Third Wave We may think we are the first generation consumed by rapid communication but we are not.   Throughout our history it has been a priority. Of course, now in the 21 st century we must ask: are we better or worse for it?
