Do Not Stop Your Song

A few years ago while in Jerusalem on a Shabbas, I walked into Meah Shearim to see the Rebbe of Ger.  I had known his father, who was the most respected and influential Hasidic Rebbe of Polish Jewry.  The gestures and mannerism of the son were exactly the sane as those of his father in pre-Auschwitz Poland.  I walked out depressed, with tears in my eyes.  We are told that when a few Egyptians drowned in the Sea, and the angels wanted to sing praise, God silenced them.  “My creatures have drowned in the Sea and you are going to sing praise?”  But the Gerer Rebbe, who witnessed the destruction of his family, of his disciples, continues to sing a pre-Auschwitz song in a post-Auschwitz world.”  -Rabbi Morris Shapiro

Sing your song as if the fate of the universe depended on it.

“Between 1305 and the early 1800’s. the House of Taxis ran a form of pony express service all over Europe….   Its couriers clad in blue and silver uniforms, crisscrossed the continent carrying messages between princes and generals, merchants and money lenders.” –Alvin Toffler, The Third Wave We may think we are the first generation consumed by rapid communication but we are not.   Throughout our history it has been a priority. Of course, now in the 21 st century we must ask: are we better or worse for it?
