Tax

Fifteen-year old Slava joined a land of musicians who traveled the countryside.  Once, six of them had only a thin blanket each and shivered through the night in an unheated train.  Would it be such a bad thing if I went to sleep and never woke up? Slava thought.  He awoke, warm, all six blankets piled on him.  During the night, one by one, his older companions had covered him with theirs.

Rostropovich has been trying ever since to repay them and an Armenian woman.  When an earthquake devastated Armenia in 1988, he organized a series of benefit performances.  he has given charity concerts all over the world, saying, “They are my tax to God.”  -Mistislav Rostropovich, maestro


Tzedaka is like that.  If you get you must give.  And if you do not get you must give.
