A Curse

A man used to drink two small glasses of schnapps every day.  He would say, “One I drink for me and another I have for a friend that died.”  He set into the practice of having two drunks in front of him at lunch, seven days each week.
One day, returning from a doctor’s visit, he ordered only one glass.
“Why?  What happened that you are only ordering one?”

He answered, “the doctor told me to give up drinking.  So now I just have one for my old friend.”

Drinking in Judaism is a sacred act, one which requires a blessing.  We must not succumb to the vice of abuse.

“Between 1305 and the early 1800’s. the House of Taxis ran a form of pony express service all over Europe….   Its couriers clad in blue and silver uniforms, crisscrossed the continent carrying messages between princes and generals, merchants and money lenders.” –Alvin Toffler, The Third Wave We may think we are the first generation consumed by rapid communication but we are not.   Throughout our history it has been a priority. Of course, now in the 21 st century we must ask: are we better or worse for it?
