Who We Are and Who We are Not

A famous woman met an old friend, now a laborer.
“How are you?” she asked her friend.
“Making a living,” came the reply.  “And how about you?”
“Oh, I have tsooris, but tell me what do you do?”
“I make a living rom writing.”
“Is that so?  From writing?? Do you know it never entered my head to take up such a business?”

From the outside all else looks simple, easy.  In this story the questioner assumes that writing is as simple as, well, writing.  But it, like other professions, is a honed skill.
Not only does everyone have his or her place but we all work to refine our profession.

Moral?  Do not assume anyone’s job or craft is simple.

“Between 1305 and the early 1800’s. the House of Taxis ran a form of pony express service all over Europe….   Its couriers clad in blue and silver uniforms, crisscrossed the continent carrying messages between princes and generals, merchants and money lenders.” –Alvin Toffler, The Third Wave We may think we are the first generation consumed by rapid communication but we are not.   Throughout our history it has been a priority. Of course, now in the 21 st century we must ask: are we better or worse for it?
