“Dermatologist
Richard J. Helfman, who was devoted to exercise, fitness, and health, died at 63
of an illness that exercise could neither prevent nor cure – fast-acting
pancreatic cancer. Helfman practiced
medicine in Coal Gables for 35 years and taught at the university of Miami
Medical School nearly that long. Helfman
expected to live a long time. His father
lived into the 80’s and his mother is active at 83. His lawyer son said: ‘It’s sort of ironic
that he died young, since he was fanatical about taking care of his body. He wanted to live a long and healthy
life. he was a long-distance runner for
25 years and ran in the orange Bowl Marathon in 1978. He only drank bottled water. he was always in good shape.” –Miami Herald
“Between 1305 and the early 1800’s. the House of Taxis ran a form of pony express service all over Europe…. Its couriers clad in blue and silver uniforms, crisscrossed the continent carrying messages between princes and generals, merchants and money lenders.” –Alvin Toffler, The Third Wave We may think we are the first generation consumed by rapid communication but we are not. Throughout our history it has been a priority. Of course, now in the 21 st century we must ask: are we better or worse for it?
