The Voice of Pain

Rabbi Steven Wise once visited China.  There, he was carried around by rickshaw.   He was amazed to hear constant coughing from the rickshaw carriers.  They would wheeze and cough non-stop.   He asked a friend, "What is this all about?"
"Don't worry," came the response.  "After two weeks you won't notice their cough."
And he was right.  After two weeks he did not notice their coughing.
Wise later said that was the saddest moment  in his life.  They were coughing and he did not hear them.

Lord, Master of all, never allow my heart to become inured to the pain of my fellow.

“Between 1305 and the early 1800’s. the House of Taxis ran a form of pony express service all over Europe….   Its couriers clad in blue and silver uniforms, crisscrossed the continent carrying messages between princes and generals, merchants and money lenders.” –Alvin Toffler, The Third Wave We may think we are the first generation consumed by rapid communication but we are not.   Throughout our history it has been a priority. Of course, now in the 21 st century we must ask: are we better or worse for it?
