Interest

The producer, Ray Stark, recalled an evening in Mexico during the filming of Night of the Iguana.  Cast members and their spouses were gathering for drinks and the question was posed: "If you had one choice as a way of life, what would you choose?"
Stark quoted Richard Burton who answered, "Adventure."  Elizabeth Taylor said, "Wealth."  Ava Gardner, "Health."  Deborah Kerr, "Happiness."  Peter Viertel, "Success."
All cliches.  Then John Huston bobbed his head and in his deep voice said, "I believe the answer would be interest."
For Stark this became his "guiding point" for life.  "If you have interest in life, you can be broke but you can survive.  You can have a terminal illness but if you have interest it keeps you going."

“Between 1305 and the early 1800’s. the House of Taxis ran a form of pony express service all over Europe….   Its couriers clad in blue and silver uniforms, crisscrossed the continent carrying messages between princes and generals, merchants and money lenders.” –Alvin Toffler, The Third Wave We may think we are the first generation consumed by rapid communication but we are not.   Throughout our history it has been a priority. Of course, now in the 21 st century we must ask: are we better or worse for it?
