Experience

An old Greek fable tells of a man who bought a donkey to transport sacks of salt to the market.  He overloaded the animal shamefully.  Staggering under the sacks of salt. The poor donkey painfully worked his way along the road to town and slipped into a stream alongside the road.
To the surprise of the animal, his burden gradually became lighter.  The water was dissolving the salt, leaving only a few wet sacks for the donkey to carry.
As he was was an intelligent donkey, every time he passed the stream he managed to fall in.  The proprietor took the problem to his wife.
“Agemnon, the solution is simple.  Throw a few sacks of dry sponges on the donkey’s back."
As the donkey wended his way into town again he reached the steam. He eased his way into the water and them climbed out of the stream.  The sacks were now much heavier.

We all learn through experience. It is a great teacher.  And great is the teacher who teaches through experience.

“Between 1305 and the early 1800’s. the House of Taxis ran a form of pony express service all over Europe….   Its couriers clad in blue and silver uniforms, crisscrossed the continent carrying messages between princes and generals, merchants and money lenders.” –Alvin Toffler, The Third Wave We may think we are the first generation consumed by rapid communication but we are not.   Throughout our history it has been a priority. Of course, now in the 21 st century we must ask: are we better or worse for it?
