How We See God

Rabbi Judah began with the verse, “Her husband is known in the gates.”  (Proverbs 31: 23)  The Holy One, blessed he He, is elevated and glorious hidden and transcendent.  No one has come into the world since the time of Creation that can understand Him or His wisdom.  Because He is so hidden, neither those above not those below are able to cleave to Him, so that all of them say, “Blessed be the glory of God from His place!”  The lower creatures say, “He must be above!”  As Scripture indicates, “Your glory is above the heavens,” (Psalms 57:6)  Thus everyone both above and below proclaims, “Blessed I the glory of God from His place!”  (Ezekiel 3:12)  for He is unknown and no one can grasp Him.  That is why its states “He husband (i.e. God) is known in the gates.”

But surely he is known is the gates (heb. sh’arim)!  he is known and cleaved according to what each person is capable of imagining (m’asher) in his mind, according to his wisdom.  Those are the sh’arim through which He is known.  But to really know Him—no is capable of that.”

Every person according to his or her own ability.  We perceive God as we are able.

“Between 1305 and the early 1800’s. the House of Taxis ran a form of pony express service all over Europe….   Its couriers clad in blue and silver uniforms, crisscrossed the continent carrying messages between princes and generals, merchants and money lenders.” –Alvin Toffler, The Third Wave We may think we are the first generation consumed by rapid communication but we are not.   Throughout our history it has been a priority. Of course, now in the 21 st century we must ask: are we better or worse for it?
