The Purpose of Religion

In Emile Durkheim’s Elementary Forms of Religious Life, he reasons that the initial purpose of religion was not to meet with God but to reach out to others.  Primitive rituals centered around experiences of birth, marriage and death when we all have a great need to share our sadness and joy with one another.
“When we feel so terribly alone, singled out by the hand of fate, when we are tempted to crawl off into a dark corner and feel sorry for ourselves, we need to be reminded that we are part of a community, that there are people who care about us and that we are still part of the stream of life.” – quoted from When Bad Things Happen to Good People.

We are one community, one extended family.

“Between 1305 and the early 1800’s. the House of Taxis ran a form of pony express service all over Europe….   Its couriers clad in blue and silver uniforms, crisscrossed the continent carrying messages between princes and generals, merchants and money lenders.” –Alvin Toffler, The Third Wave We may think we are the first generation consumed by rapid communication but we are not.   Throughout our history it has been a priority. Of course, now in the 21 st century we must ask: are we better or worse for it?
