The Rabbis learned: When Adam saw the
days getting shorter and shorter, he said, ‘woe is me, perhaps it is because I
sinned that the world is becoming dark, and will return to chaos and disorder,
and this is the death sentence that was decreed upon me from heaven’. He went
and sat and fasted and prayed for eight days. When he saw the winter solstice
arrive, and the days began getting longer and longer, he said, ‘it is just the
way of the world’. He went and made an eight-day holiday. - Avoda Zara 8a
“Between 1305 and the early 1800’s. the House of Taxis ran a form of pony express service all over Europe…. Its couriers clad in blue and silver uniforms, crisscrossed the continent carrying messages between princes and generals, merchants and money lenders.” –Alvin Toffler, The Third Wave We may think we are the first generation consumed by rapid communication but we are not. Throughout our history it has been a priority. Of course, now in the 21 st century we must ask: are we better or worse for it?
